Daniel’s Story
Daniel had a PIVC inserted by ambulance staff that remained in situ for four days, rather than being removed within 24 hours or upon transfer to the ward. He subsequently developed line related sepsis.
As a result, instead of being discharged home, Daniel required admission to ICU followed by inpatient rehabilitation. This extended length of stay incurred an estimated additional cost of approximately $38,000 to the health service.
