iIMPROVE PIVC Toolkit: Implementing Best Practice for Peripheral Intravenous Cannula Use Across Health Services
This toolkit provides a comprehensive suite of interventions, templates, and resources to support best practice peripheral intravenous cannula (PIVC) use across health services. Health services can follow the full step-by-step guide or adapt interventions to meet local needs.
Key features
Suite of Interventions: Access practical, evidence-based strategies to embed best practice
Smart Audit Tool: Conduct annual point-of-care and policy audits, generate automated reports, and access real-time data to drive continuous improvement
Idle Cannula Cost Calculator: Estimate the financial impact of unused cannulas
Idle Cannula Carbon Calculator: Measure the environmental footprint of common practices
This toolkit is the main output of the JUST SAY ‘NO’ TO THE JUST IN CASE CANNULA study, a stepped-wedge cluster-controlled trial evaluating best practice for peripheral intravenous cannula use across health services. Co-designed with clinicians, researchers, and consumers, it was developed in collaboration with multiple Australian health services, universities, and research partners. Led by Professor Diana Egerton-Warburton and funded by the MRFF (MRF2023389), the study received ethics approval from the Monash Health HREC.

This toolkit provides practical, evidence-based interventions to support best practice PIVC use across health services. Interventions can be adapted to your local context and implemented with input from staff and consumers.
Cannula Best Practice Audit Tool
Conduct annual point-of-care and policy audits, generate automated reports, and access real-time data to support monitoring, benchmarking, and continuous improvement in cannula practice.
Idle Cannula Carbon and Cost Calculator
Estimate the financial and environmental impact of unused peripheral intravenous cannulas in your health service.
Patient Stories: Lived PIVC Experience
Hear directly from patients about their experiences with PIVCs in Emergency Department setting. These short videos highlight the real impact of unnecessary cannulation, helping clinicians understand patient perspectives and improve care
